Organization and Program Background:
Coastal Nations Fisheries (the “Company”) is a transformative fishing company
owned by eight First Nations located on BC’s North Coast, Central Coast and Haida
Gwaii, namely Gitga’at, Gitxaala, Haida, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo Xai’Xais, Metlakatla,
Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv (the “Nations”).
In 2021 the groundbreaking Fisheries Resource Reconciliation Agreement (FRRA)
and the associated schedules were established between the Nations, Coastal First
Nations (the “CFN”) and the Government of Canada. The core mandates of the
Company are to support the Nations in revitalizing their Community Based Fisheries
(the “CBFs”), to set up a sustainable coast-wide commercial fishing company Coastal
Nations Commercial Fishing (the “CNCF”) and to financially assist a shared
governance relationship between the Nations and Canada.
The Company is responsible for using funds provided by the Government of Canada
held in trust for the Nations to acquire licences and quota that are annually provided
as requested to each Nation under the CBFs or held by CNF for the use by CNCF.
As a result, the Company already holds significant and ever-growing assets in
commercial fishing licences and quotas as well as vessels and gear, particularly in
the dive and groundfish sectors. Annual fishing arrangements and joint ventures are
in place. The goal is to continue to develop and enhance the assets and joint
ventures in the future.
